While the construction industry has historically been a male-dominated field, we have seen a sharp rise in the number of women taking on not only labor and administrative roles, but also positions in marketing, management and even ownership! And with companies now prioritizing a focus on diversity, we believe this exciting trend is poised to continue over the years to come.|
Suppli's Extra Credit Community recently named Action Gypsum Supply its “Supplier of the Month” and, not surprisingly, the company recognizes the amazing woman that are changing the face of construction including Gloria Macias, Director of Credit & Collections.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Gloria to gain her perspective on the challenges and opportunities associated with a career in the construction industry.

What do you like about working in the construction industry?
Gloria M.
I may not be constructing buildings, but my team and I are contributing to the growth of my city and multiple states through our extension of credit opportunities to the companies who are and that’s satisfying to be a part of.

How do you see the industry changing for women?
Gloria M.
In my experience, at least, I feel respected for the knowledge and skill that I bring to my company. We see more and more opportunities for women, including women in construction focused groups and networking events. I believe women now hold a pretty significant role in this industry and it’s only going to get better.

Do you believe you have an opportunity to advance at your company?
Gloria M.
100% I do. Action Gypsums ownership is such an advocate for growth. I am confident that any path I want to explore would be supported and encouraged.

Do you have opportunities to network with other women in construction? (If yes, how did you find these opportunities?)
Gloria M.
The opportunities are endless. Do I get to take advantage of them as much as I would like? Not at all. But the women I have met through networking events have been invaluable. I reach out to peers that I have met from those events daily.

What have you achieved in your career that you are most proud of?
Gloria M.
I’m most proud of the relationships I have built both internally within my organization from sales to management and peer departments but also externally with our direct clients, manufacturers and contractors.

What advice would you give a to a woman looking to enter the industry?
Gloria M.
Never underestimate the value you bring to construction, just because you are a woman. I’ve always said “construction” just isn’t hard hats and steel toe boots, although you can strap those on and hang drywall if you want to! The administration, planning and strategizing teams that support and bind construction as a whole are just as important as being on a job site.
